Centurion CrossFit Fort Hood Philosophy

In the Roman infantry, centurions initially commanded a centuria or "century" of 100 men, then 60 and finally 80. During the Imperial era Centurions gradually rose in seniority in their cohort, commanding centuries with higher precedence, until commanding the senior century and therefore the whole cohort. The very best centurions were then promoted to become centurions in the First Cohort, called Primi Ordines, commanding one of the ten centuries and also taking on a staff role. The most senior centurion of the legion was the Primus Pilus who commanded the first century.

All centurions, however senior, had their own allocated century.

Centurions often suffered heavy casualties in battle, generally fighting alongside the legionaries they commanded. They usually led from the front fighting alongside their Soldiers, occupying a position at the front right of the century formation. They led and inspired their men by example. They also sought to display the skill and courage that got them to their rank in the first place. It is for these reasons that they often suffered a disproportionate number of casualties.

The centurion was in charge of his century/cohort. Centurions were also tasked with the training of the legionaries. They could often be merciless in their handling of this task, and were known for dealing out brutal punishments. While the Roman army was known for these harsh conditions, it paid off during battle when strict order and discipline could decide the outcome. This often allowed the Legions to succeed in battles where they faced a numerically superior army.

The centurion in the infantry is chosen for his size, strength and dexterity in throwing his missile weapons and for his skill in the use of his sword and shield; in short for his expertness in all the exercises. He is to be vigilant, temperate, active and readier to execute the orders he receives than to talk; Strict in exercising and keeping up proper discipline among his Soldiers.

CrossFit Fort Hood’s primary mission is preparing Soldiers for the physical demands of combat.

We will do this through the “workout of the day” – the WOD.

It will be our job to lead and inspire you, suffer next to you, and give you knowledge to empower you to better train yourself and your mates.

You will experience a paradigm shift in exercise and nutritional information; it will be at odds with what you thought you knew; what you have taken for granted your whole life, and what society tells you – embrace it. It is necessary to unlearn what you thought to be true in order to embrace the guiding principles and foundations of CrossFit.

We will train you safely and effectively, helping you scale appropriately and leading you to what a short while ago seemed impossible. We will also most likely re-teach you basic movements for the workouts making you safer and more effective.

You should fear only one thing: the WOD. The enemy pales in comparison. If you don’t fear the WOD, it isn’t hard enough.

Puking is acceptable. Quitting is not. If you give up here, you give up in battle – this is unacceptable.

If you are not in pain (mentally and / or physically) during the workout, you are wrong.

The WODs will suck. They will test you physically. They will test you mentally. You WILL want to quit, but every time you pick the weight back up, knock out more pull ups, begin running again; you will be forging mental armor in addition to your physical armor and this is perhaps the most important component.

We do not have all of the answers. We have a modest amount of experience and knowledge coupled with a sincere desire to impart our knowledge and experience to those who have a sincere desire to learn. What does this mean to you? It means that you agree to open your mind to our ideas and methodology, take the initiative to learn and not always be lead, and share any valuable information with your mates. This is an open source regimen. We promise to give you everything we have and ask you to do the same.

Fort Hood is the largest Army post in the free world. More Soldiers are stationed here than anywhere else, but sometimes we are unbelievably slow to change. This program can make a DIFFERENCE not only in you but in Fort Hood and the Army. CrossFit is a beast that sucks people in and we want this affiliate to be the same way. We ask that you take what you learn here back to your units and friends and spread the good news. Show Soldiers and leaders that you don’t have to run everyday to get fast, and that being in shape is nothing like being fit. With your help we can make a real difference in Fort Hood.

We can’t run this gym by ourselves. We need you to take ownership of the gym. If you are in our gym then our gym is your gym. Treat it like it is your own. Replace everything better than you found it.
